MATCH – Reviewed by Joyce

Match is a play adapted for the big screen, and as such, is susceptible to a couple of the common problems that often challenge efforts to work with the source material.

First, most of the narrative unfolds in one location. The movie does contain a sparse peppering of other sets, but most of the story takes place in a New York apartment. Also, Match is dialogue-heavy, and those viewers looking for a larger dose of action might get antsy.

But this film demonstrates the range and depth of Patrick Stewart’s acting skills. Audiences have long delighted in Stewart as Captain Jean Luc Picard in the Star Trek franchise, as the voice in the animated Family Guy, The Simpsons, Ice Age, and Ted (to name just a few) and his dramatic roles in numerous made-for-television Shakespeare productions. In Match, Stewart delivers an incredible dramatic performance. I was more than happy to watch Match to simply absorb his commanding and magnetic art. His was a beautiful and complex interpretation of his character, Tobi Powell.

Tobi is a well-respected Julliard professor of dance, following a storied career as a dancer. He has been contacted by a woman, Lisa (Carla Gugino), who wants to interview him for her graduate thesis on the history of dance with a focus on the 1960’s. She is accompanied by her husband Mike (Matthew Lillard), the three meet and proceed with the interview. Much is uncovered during their time together, and the dramatic tension quickly fires up.

At a brief 92 minutes, the narrative is fast-paced and offers quite a bit to Patrick Stewart fans, connoisseurs of fine acting, and those who enjoy an exploration of compelling themes. We also get a nuanced consideration of how a man’s choices impact his life’s arc and the lives of others.

The merits of Match far outweigh any flaws, and Patrick Stewart joins the excellent older actors who do some of their best work in their later years. – [DVD]
